Hukou Waterfalls — China
China's thundering 'Kettle Spout' waterfall, where the Yellow River squeezes through a narrow gorge in a roaring surge of sediment-laden water.
About this spectacle
Hukou Waterfalls is one of China's most dramatic natural spectacles, where the Yellow River narrows abruptly through a limestone gorge, sending a torrent of ochre-colored water crashing through a bottleneck slot only about 30 meters wide before plunging downstream. The sheer force of the water generates a constant roar audible from a distance and throws up billowing mist and spray that can drench onlookers. Visitors standing on the clifftop viewing platforms feel the ground vibrate underfoot as the river churns and boils below. In spring, snowmelt swells the flow to its most spectacular, while in winter the falls partially freeze, coating surrounding rocks in fantastical ice formations. The water's characteristic yellow-brown color, laden with loess sediment from the Loess Plateau, gives the spectacle a uniquely raw, elemental quality unlike any other major waterfall in the world.
