Huka Falls — New Zealand
New Zealand's most visited natural attraction — a volcanic-gorge waterfall where the Waikato River erupts in a roaring wall of electric-blue water.
About this spectacle
Huka Falls is where the Waikato River — New Zealand's longest — is squeezed through a narrow volcanic gorge before erupting over a ledge in a thundering torrent of brilliant turquoise and white water. The sheer volume of water passing through the constricted channel creates a roar audible well before you reach the viewing platforms. Visitors stand at the railing mesmerised by the almost electric blue of the water, a colour produced by the depth and purity of the flow. The mist catches the light on sunny days and the force of the falls sends constant vibration through the ground underfoot. A short loop walk through native bush leads to multiple vantage points, including a lookout directly above the plunge pool. Jet boats pass beneath, giving a sense of the scale. At any hour the spectacle is dramatic, but the midday light particularly illuminates the extraordinary colour of the water.
