Horsetail Falls Firefall — Yosemite California

For roughly ten days each February, the setting sun aligns perfectly with Yosemite's Horsetail Fall — a small seasonal waterfall on El Capitan's east face — to illuminate it in intense shades of orange and amber that make it appear to be a river of molten lava cascading 480 metres down sheer granite. The phenomenon requires a precise combination of conditions: flowing water, a clear sunset sky, and the correct sun angle that occurs only in mid-February. Thousands of photographers gather in Yosemite Valley for the five-to-ten-minute spectacle, which is entirely ephemeral. Missing it by a day of cloud cover means waiting a full year — which only intensifies the feverish anticipation that surrounds each February window.

About this spectacle

Each February, for roughly ten days, Yosemite Valley transforms into an outdoor amphitheatre for one of nature's most theatrical light shows. As the sun dips toward the western horizon, its rays strike Horsetail Fall on El Capitan's east face at a precise angle, flooding the thin ribbon of water with intense orange and amber light. For five to ten minutes the waterfall appears to glow from within — a cascade of apparent molten lava tumbling 480 metres down sheer granite. The air hums with the sound of hundreds of camera shutters and muffled gasps. The surrounding valley floor fills with tripods and telephoto lenses angled upward. The spectacle is entirely dependent on three conditions converging simultaneously: water flowing down the fall, a cloudless sky at sunset, and the narrow February window when the sun angle is correct. When all three align, the result is visually overwhelming. When clouds roll in, the show simply does not happen, lending every clear-sky evening a charged, almost desperate quality that experienced visitors describe as electric.
