Hooker Falls — United States
A wide, curtain-style waterfall in Dupont State Forest, NC — dramatic yet accessible, with a beautiful plunge pool and short trail.
About this spectacle
Hooker Falls is a broad, curtain-style waterfall tucked within Dupont State Recreational Forest in the Blue Ridge foothills of North Carolina. Visitors follow a short, relatively flat trail through mixed hardwood forest before the falls come into view — a wide sheet of water tumbling over a rock ledge into a calm, turquoise-tinted plunge pool. The sound builds as you approach: a steady, immersive roar softened by surrounding forest. The pool's edges are rocky and accessible, inviting visitors to wade at the margins. In autumn, surrounding maples and oaks frame the falls in warm reds and oranges; in late winter, ice formations sometimes cling to the rock face. Light filters through the canopy in the morning, creating soft, diffuse conditions ideal for photography. The overall atmosphere is serene and unhurried — a place where the drama is gentle rather than overwhelming.
