About this spectacle

The Höllenschlucht near Bad Berneck is a dramatic narrow gorge carved by the Ölschnitz river through the ancient granite and gneiss of the Fichtelgebirge. Visitors walk between towering rock walls draped in moss and fern, where the stream tumbles over boulders and the air stays cool and damp even in summer. The confined space amplifies the sound of rushing water, creating a sensory experience of enclosure and geological force. Filtered light penetrates the gorge at odd angles, illuminating spray and casting deep shadows across the stacked rockfaces. The trail follows the stream closely, offering intimate views of the flowing water and the sculpted stone. Autumn brings vivid colour from surrounding forest, while spring snowmelt swells the Ölschnitz to its most energetic. It is a compact but evocative showcase of how water reshapes a mountain landscape over millennia.
