High Force Waterfall — United Kingdom
England's most powerful waterfall, where the River Tees crashes over ancient volcanic rock in a thunderous curtain of white water.
About this spectacle
High Force is one of England's most dramatic waterfalls, where the River Tees plunges over the Whin Sill — a hard dolerite ledge — in a powerful curtain of white water. Visitors approach along a wooded path that builds anticipation before the roar of falling water fills the air. The falls drop into a rocky plunge pool surrounded by dark basalt columns, and in wet seasons the flow is thunderous, sending spray drifting across the gorge. Autumn brings colour to the riverside trees, while winter floods can swell the falls to awesome proportions. The surrounding Teesdale landscape is open moorland, with the gorge carving a sudden, striking contrast. It is a place felt as much as seen — the ground vibrates faintly underfoot during high flows, and the cold mist reaches viewers on the viewing platform below.
