Hexentanzplatz
Granite plateau 244 m above the Bode valley at Thale in the Harz.
About this spectacle
Hexentanzplatz is a striking granite plateau rising 244 metres above the Bode valley near Thale in the Harz mountains of central Germany. Visitors arrive to find sweeping panoramic views across the deeply incised gorge below, with forested slopes stretching to the horizon. The exposed rock outcrops give the site a raw, elemental character — wind-scoured and open to the sky. The name, meaning 'witches' dancing place', hints at the folkloric atmosphere the landscape evokes, though the primary draw is the dramatic geology and the vertiginous drop to the valley floor. A cable car provides access from Thale, making the plateau reachable without a strenuous climb. The site also hosts an open-air theatre and wildlife park, meaning visitors encounter both natural scenery and cultural infrastructure side by side.
