Hengifoss Waterfall — Iceland
Iceland's most geologically vivid waterfall, where red and black layered cliffs frame a dramatic cascade above Lagarfljót lake.
About this spectacle
Hengifoss is one of Iceland's most visually striking waterfalls, plunging dramatically into a gorge whose walls reveal vivid horizontal bands of red and black — layers of ancient basalt interspersed with iron-rich clay sediments oxidized to a deep rust color. The falls cascade roughly into a broad pool below, and the walk to reach them passes the smaller but equally photogenic Litlanesfoss, whose columnar basalt formations frame a curtain of water like a natural cathedral. The hike itself rewards visitors with sweeping views across Lagarfljót lake and the surrounding Eastern Highlands. The sound of the falls builds as you approach, and the spray creates a cool mist that lingers at the base. The surrounding landscape is open and rugged — typical of Iceland's east — with tundra grasses, mossy boulders, and occasional glimpses of Arctic birds along the trail.
