Hawksbill Sea Turtle Nesting — Tortuguero
Hawksbill sea turtles haul ashore at night on Tortuguero's jungle-backed Caribbean beach to nest — a rare and moving encounter with one of the ocean's most endangered reptiles.
About this spectacle
On the dark beaches of Tortuguero, hawksbill sea turtles emerge from the Caribbean after dark to laboriously drag themselves above the tide line and excavate nests in the sand. Visitors witness the entire process under strict red-light conditions: the heavy breathing, the rhythmic scooping of flippers, the careful deposit of eggs, and the slow return to the surf. Rangers lead small groups at a respectful distance, making the experience intimate and hushed. The jungle-fringed beach amplifies the sense of witnessing something ancient and unhurried. Dawn walks may reveal fresh turtle tracks where nesting occurred overnight, and hatchling emergences — when dozens of tiny turtles scramble seaward — are among the most charged wildlife moments Costa Rica offers.
