Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is a sheltered volcanic crater bay on O'ahu's southeastern shore, famous for its thriving coral reef ecosystem and extraordinary marine biodiversity. Snorkelers glide above shallow reefs teeming with Hawaiian green sea turtles, colorful reef fish including humuhumunukunukuapua'a, Moorish idols, parrotfish, and spinner dolphins occasionally visible in deeper waters. The bay's crescent of white sand is framed by steep volcanic ridgepaths, creating a dramatic natural amphitheater effect. The water clarity is exceptional on calm mornings, with sunlight filtering through to illuminate coral formations just a few feet below the surface. Visitors typically wade in from shore and find themselves surrounded by fish almost immediately. The site operates as a protected marine sanctuary, meaning wildlife has habituated to calm human presence and encounters are reliably close. Entry requires viewing an educational film before entering the beach. Morning visits reward with calmer seas and more abundant wildlife activity.
