About this spectacle

At the summit of Hallasan, Jeju Island's dormant shield volcano, lies Baengnokdam — a serene crater lake cradled within ancient volcanic walls. Visitors who complete the demanding ascent are rewarded with a view of still, mirror-like water reflecting the surrounding caldera rim and open sky. In autumn, the crater's slopes blaze with crimson and gold foliage, while winter brings a dusting of snow that transforms the rocky rim into a stark, sculptural landscape. Spring sees alpine wildflowers emerging along the trail margins. The air at the summit is noticeably cooler and crisper than at sea level, and on clear days the panorama extends across Jeju's lava plains and coastline to the surrounding sea. The crater itself feels enclosed and elemental — wind-scoured basalt, cold lake water, and silence broken only by wind and the occasional bird call. It is a geological marvel shaped by eruption and erosion over millennia.
