Hafragilsfoss Waterfall — Iceland
A thundering glacial waterfall carving through Iceland's dramatic basalt canyon, offering raw power with fewer crowds than its famous neighbor Dettifoss.
About this spectacle
Hafragilsfoss is a powerful waterfall on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river in northeast Iceland, located just downstream from the more famous Dettifoss. The gorge it carves through is dramatic — dark basalt columns frame the falls as glacial meltwater thunders into a churning basin below. The sound alone is immersive, a deep constant roar that resonates through the canyon walls. Unlike Dettifoss, Hafragilsfoss draws fewer visitors, lending it a rawer, more solitary atmosphere. The surrounding Jökulsárgljúfur canyon is streaked with rust and black volcanic rock, and on sunny days the mist from the falls can produce fleeting rainbows. The scale of water and rock creates a visceral sense of geological force — water wearing down the landscape in real time.
