About this spectacle

Tucked into a quiet side valley near Bad Urach in Baden-Württemberg, the Gütersteiner Wasserfälle are a rare active tufa waterfall system where calcium-rich spring water cascades over living calcareous deposits. As water flows, it slowly precipitates limestone, building up intricate terraced formations and mossy curtains of tufa in soft amber and cream tones. The sound of falling water mingles with birdsong in the sheltered valley, and the interplay of light filtering through the canopy gives the cascades an almost luminous quality. Close inspection reveals delicate algae and bryophytes colonising the wet rock face, making this as much a botanical curiosity as a scenic one. The site is modest in scale but rich in texture and detail, rewarding patient visitors with a close look at an ongoing geological process.
