Grey Seal Pupping (Lincolnshire / Orkney) — Donna Nook
One of England's most accessible grey seal pupping colonies, where hundreds of newborn white-coated pups and bellowing bulls pack the Lincolnshire shoreline each winter.
About this spectacle
Each November and December, Donna Nook National Nature Reserve on the Lincolnshire coast transforms into one of England's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles. Hundreds of grey seal cows haul out onto the sand and dune grasslands to give birth, and the beach becomes densely packed with white-furred pups, attentive mothers, and bellowing bulls competing for territory. Visitors watch from a fenced boardwalk pathway just metres from the action, close enough to hear the distinctive moaning calls and the grunts of bulls clashing. The pups grow visibly week by week, their white natal coats gradually moulting to reveal sleek grey fur. The sheer density of animals, the raw sounds of birth and competition, and the proximity of the viewing area make this an unusually intimate encounter with large wild mammals. RAF Donna Nook's bombing range backdrop adds a surreal industrial contrast to the natural drama unfolding in front of it.
