Greater Prairie Chicken Lek — Flint Hills Kansas USA
The greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido) lek on the Flint Hills' tallgrass prairie remnant from March through May — the males' orange air sacs inflated, the pinnate feathers on the neck erected, the feet stamping the soil in a rapid 'booming' sound produced by air expelled from the sacs — creates North America's finest surviving prairie grouse lek on the continent's last intact tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The Konza Prairie Biological Station near Manhattan, Kansas and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve provide guided blind access, and the combined display of 15–25 males producing the resonant booming (audible 1 kilometre) in the dawn's near-darkness creates one of the Great Plains' most specifically American wildlife dawns. The greater prairie chicken's 90% range contraction since European settlement and the Flint Hills' status as the tallgrass prairie's last stronghold gives each lek visit the additional weight of witnessing a species' battle for ecological survival.
About this spectacle
In the pre-dawn darkness of a Flint Hills spring morning, visitors hunker inside a blind as the world's last great tallgrass prairie slowly comes alive. Males emerge onto the lek, inflating vivid orange air sacs on either side of the neck and erecting pinnate feathers into stiff collars. Then the booming begins — a low, resonant sound audible up to a kilometre away, produced by air expelled from those sacs as feet stamp the earth in rapid, trance-like rhythms. Fifteen to twenty-five males compete simultaneously, occasionally lunging at rivals in brief, explosive chases. The light lifts incrementally, turning the golden-brown grass silver, then amber, as the spectacle intensifies. This is North America's finest surviving prairie grouse lek, set within the continent's last intact tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The Konza Prairie Biological Station and Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve offer guided blind access, making this a rare, intimate encounter with a species whose range has shrunk by 90% since European settlement.
