Grandfather Mountain
One of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge, Grandfather Mountain offers iconic swinging-bridge summit views and fiery fall foliage above the North Carolina High Country.
About this spectacle
Grandfather Mountain rises above the Blue Ridge Parkway in the North Carolina High Country, offering sweeping panoramic views across rolling Appalachian ridgelines and forested valleys. Visitors cross the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge — a narrow suspension bridge spanning a dramatic rocky chasm — to reach the exposed summit pinnacles. Wind roars across the peaks, clouds drift at eye level, and on clear days the horizon stretches for dozens of miles across layered blue ridges. In autumn the surrounding hardwood forests ignite in deep reds, oranges, and golds; in winter ice rimes the rocks and snow dusts the summits. Spring wildflowers bloom along the nature museum trails below. Wildlife including black bears, peregrine falcons, and river otters inhabit the preserve. The mountain's rugged, rocky character gives it a raw Highland feel uncommon in the eastern United States, rewarding visitors with both dramatic scenery and close-up views of rare Appalachian flora and fauna.
