Grand Falls Chocolate Falls
A roaring chocolate-brown waterfall surging over a basalt ledge in the Arizona desert — stunning, seasonal, and utterly unexpected.
About this spectacle
Grand Falls, nicknamed the 'Chocolate Falls' of Arizona, is a seasonal waterfall on the Little Colorado River northeast of Flagstaff. When flowing, the falls drop over a wide basalt ledge in a thundering curtain of rich brown, sediment-laden water — earning the chocolate nickname for their distinctive murky color. The roar of the falls carries across the flat, scrubby desert landscape, a startling contrast to the surrounding arid terrain. Visitors stand on the basalt rim above and below the falls, feeling the mist and watching the churning rust-colored water cascade down in multiple tiers. The setting is raw and unpolished — no facilities, no guardrails — just open desert sky, red rock, and the surprisingly powerful rush of a river in flood. Spring snowmelt and summer monsoon rains are the two windows when the falls run strong.
