Gorilla Trekking — Mgahinga Uganda
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda's Virunga volcano chain — the smaller, less-visited partner to Bwindi — offers mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) trekking to the Nyakagezi family group across the volcanic slopes of Mts Gahinga, Sabyinyo, and Muhavura. The Mgahinga gorilla experience differs from Bwindi in landscape character: the open volcanic slopes above the bamboo forest zone provide more light and clearer views of the gorilla group's behaviour, and the silverback Rafiki's unusual golden colouration (a rare variant) makes him uniquely identifiable. The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) — a bamboo forest specialist endemic to the Virungas, with bright orange upperparts and golden-yellow fur — treks separately in the bamboo zone and can be combined with gorilla trekking in a single day, making Mgahinga the only park where two primate trek species are simultaneously available.
About this spectacle
Stepping into Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, visitors move through dense bamboo forest before emerging onto the open volcanic flanks of Mts Gahinga, Sabyinyo, and Muhavura. Here, against a backdrop of sweeping Virunga lava slopes, the Nyakagezi family group moves at a pace dictated by the silverback Rafiki — immediately recognisable by his extraordinary golden fur, a rare colour variant found nowhere else in wild gorilla populations. The open terrain above the bamboo zone floods encounters with natural light, giving clear, unobstructed sightlines as family members forage, groom, and play. Breath comes harder at altitude, and the air carries the cool, earthy scent of volcanic soil and vegetation. Later, descending back into the bamboo belt, trekkers can encounter the vivid orange-and-gold colouration of the endemic golden monkey darting through the culms — a spectacle unique to Mgahinga. Two primate worlds, one volcanic landscape, one day.
