Gomantong Cave Bat Emergence — Sabah Borneo
Gomantong Cave in Sabah's Lower Kinabatangan area is one of Borneo's largest limestone caves and home to both the edible-nest swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus, whose nests form the basis of bird's nest soup) and a colony of wrinkle-lipped bats estimated at 2 million individuals. Each evening at dusk, the bats' spiral emergence from the cave entrance — circling in a dense column for 30–45 minutes before dispersing into the surrounding forest — is one of Southeast Asia's most reliable and dramatic wildlife spectacles. The spiral column of bats, stretching 200 metres into the evening sky, is counterbalanced by the incoming swiftlets returning to roost and the bat hawks that hunt the interface between the two flows. The floor of the cave — covered in guano that supports a unique ecosystem of cave cockroaches, silverfish, and centipedes — is itself an extraordinary biological environment visible on guided cave tours.
About this spectacle
Each evening at dusk, visitors gather at the mouth of Gomantong Cave to watch one of Southeast Asia's most dramatic wildlife spectacles unfold. As darkness approaches, millions of wrinkle-lipped bats begin spiralling upward from the cave entrance in a dense, twisting column that can stretch 200 metres into the fading sky. The aerial display lasts 30–45 minutes, during which the outbound bats weave between incoming swiftlets returning to roost — a two-directional river of life crossing in mid-air. Bat hawks carve through the interface, picking off individuals with swift precision. The sound is a continuous soft roar of wingbeats, punctuated by shrill calls. Inside the cave, guided tours reveal a secondary spectacle: a living floor of guano supporting cave cockroaches, silverfish, and centipedes, a complete ecosystem thriving in near-total darkness. The limestone walls drip with moisture and the smell of guano is pungent and unmistakable. The whole experience is visceral, sensory, and completely unlike any conventional wildlife encounter.
