Glass Mountain Obsidian
Walk across a hillside carpeted in jet-black volcanic glass — one of the largest and most accessible obsidian flows in North America.
About this spectacle
Glass Mountain in northern California is one of the most accessible and dramatic obsidian flows in North America. Visitors walk across vast fields of jet-black volcanic glass, where chunks and shards of obsidian catch the light with a deep, glossy sheen. The landscape is raw and otherworldly — fractured black glass stretches across the hillside, contrasting with pale pumice and sparse high-desert vegetation. The crunch underfoot, the mirror-like reflections, and the sheer abundance of exposed volcanic glass create a genuinely tactile, visually striking experience. On clear days the surrounding Modoc Plateau opens up broad views of volcanic terrain. This is a young lava dome complex, and the geological evidence of its formation is immediate and legible — no interpretation needed. Bring sturdy footwear to protect against sharp obsidian edges.
