About this spectacle

Each winter, thousands of Giant Australian Cuttlefish converge in the shallow waters off Point Lowly near Whyalla to breed — one of the world's largest known cephalopod aggregations. Males outnumber females dramatically, leading to extraordinary displays of flickering, pulsating colour as males compete for mating rights. The shallow, clear water makes this a snorkeller's paradise: animals move within arm's reach, their skin rippling through iridescent waves of gold, blue, and purple. The sea floor becomes a mosaic of cuttlefish holding territory, fleeing rivals, and mating in plain view. Even from the shore, the density of animals near the rocks is visible. The experience is quiet, intimate, and utterly alien — an encounter with intelligence and colour unlike almost anything else in the natural world.
