Geysir Andernach

About this spectacle

Standing on the Namedy peninsula along the Rhine, Geysir Andernach erupts with spectacular force roughly every two hours, shooting a column of naturally carbonated cold water up to 50–60 metres into the air — far taller than the famous hot-water geysers of Iceland. Unlike thermal geysers, this phenomenon is driven by CO₂-rich volcanic groundwater rising through a narrow borehole. Visitors board a ferry from Andernach to reach the peninsula, where they await the eruption on a viewing platform. The geyser gives little warning before it explodes upward with a roar and a fine mist that drifts across the crowd. The spectacle lasts only minutes, but the combination of the river setting, the anticipation, and the sheer height of the plume makes it genuinely dramatic. The surrounding Rhineland landscape, with vineyard-covered slopes visible across the water, adds to the scenic backdrop.
