Garden of the Gods Illinois
Ancient sandstone formations sculpted into mushroom rocks and balanced boulders rise above the Shawnee Hills, glowing amber at sunrise with sweeping views across southern Illinois.
About this spectacle
Garden of the Gods in the Shawnee National Forest of southern Illinois presents an otherworldly tableau of ancient sandstone formations rising above a forested ridge. Visitors walk among towering mushroom-shaped rocks, balanced boulders, and wind-sculpted pillars that glow amber and rust-red in low-angle sunlight. The short loop trail weaves past named formations — Camel Rock, Anvil Rock, Table Rock — offering sweeping views across the Shawnee Hills and Ohio River valley. The silence is broken mainly by the wind and birdsong. In autumn, the surrounding hardwood canopy ignites in golds and reds, framing the ancient rocks with seasonal colour. At dawn the formations catch the first light dramatically, and on clear days the distant ridgelines layer into blue haze. The geology here spans hundreds of millions of years, visible in the cross-bedded sandstone layers. The trail is relatively short but the visual payoff — sculpted rock against sky and forest — is consistently striking.
