Fugaku Wind Cave is a lava tube formed by volcanic activity on the northern slopes of Mount Fuji, part of the Aokigahara lava forest region. Inside, visitors walk through a tunnel of solidified basalt where temperatures remain cool year-round, creating an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. The cave interior reveals dramatic lava formations including ropy pahoehoe surfaces, lava shelves, and ice formations that persist even in summer due to cold air trapped within. The cool breath of air escaping the cave entrance gives the site its name. Dimly lit passages lead visitors past geological features that speak directly to the volcanic origins of the landscape beneath Mount Fuji. The surrounding forest of dense trees growing from jagged lava adds to the surreal, primal atmosphere just steps from the cave mouth. It is a short but memorable geological encounter.
