About this spectacle

Florence Falls is a twin-plunge waterfall tucked into the monsoon rainforest of Litchfield National Park, in Australia's Northern Territory. Standing at the viewing platform, you hear the falls before you see them — a sustained roar as two curtains of water drop into a deep, clear plunge pool fringed by pandanus palms and green vine forest. A staircase descends to the pool's edge, where mist drifts across the water and the air cools noticeably. Swimmers wade into the turquoise water beneath the falls, surrounded by red sandstone walls draped in ferns. The surrounding woodland resonates with birdsong, and the contrast between the dry-season blue sky above the gorge rim and the lush microclimate below is striking. Late afternoon light hits the rock faces at low angles, intensifying the colours of the water and stone.
