Flamingo Breeding Aggregation
Up to 2 million lesser flamingos turn Lake Bogoria and Lake Nakuru shocking pink — the greatest flamingo concentration on Earth.
About this spectacle
At Lakes Bogoria and Nakuru in Kenya's Rift Valley, up to two million lesser flamingos mass along alkaline shorelines, dyeing the water and mudflats a vivid, almost surreal pink. At dawn the spectacle reaches its peak: tens of thousands of birds take flight simultaneously, producing a roar of wingbeats and high-pitched honking that fills the still morning air. Wading birds jostle for position in the shallows, their curved bills sweeping through blue-green algae-rich brine. The collective movement of the flock — rippling, surging, lifting off in waves — creates an almost hypnotic visual rhythm. The smell of alkaline mud and bird life is pungent and unmistakable. Heat shimmer over the lake can create mirage effects that make distant flocks appear to float above the surface. Early morning light turns the massed plumage from deep coral to pale rose as the sun rises, offering extraordinary colour gradients across the water.
