Felsenmeer Odenwald
Boulder field of granodiorite on a forested slope at Lautertal.
About this spectacle
The Felsenmeer — meaning 'sea of rocks' — is a remarkable geological landscape near Lautertal in the Odenwald region of Hesse, Germany. Enormous blocks of granodiorite, some the size of houses, lie tumbled across a forested hillside as if scattered by a giant hand. Visitors walk among and between the boulders, some of which bear traces of ancient quarrying attempts, feeling the cool, damp air trapped between the stones even on warm days. Moss and ferns drape the grey rock surfaces in vivid green, creating a striking contrast. The surrounding mixed woodland adds seasonal colour, with spring wildflowers at ground level and autumn foliage overhead. The atmosphere is quietly dramatic — hushed by the trees, punctuated by birdsong, and made otherworldly by the sheer scale of the rock field. A popular local hiking destination, the site rewards explorers who clamber over the rocks with unusual perspectives and excellent photographic opportunities.
