Feldsee
Glacial cirque lake at 1,109 m on the Feldberg, in the Black Forest.
About this spectacle
Feldsee is a small glacial cirque lake nestled at 1,109 metres on the slopes of the Feldberg, the highest peak in the Black Forest. Fed by snowmelt and spring seeps, the dark, still water reflects surrounding spruce and fir forest, creating a moody, intimate atmosphere even in summer. Mist frequently clings to the bowl-shaped depression that formed from glacial scouring during the last Ice Age, lending the lake an ethereal quality in the early morning. Visitors follow a well-marked loop trail around the shoreline, watching for dippers along the rocky margins and common frogs in the shallows. In autumn, the surrounding conifers and scattered beech trees shift in colour, while winter can bring snow-laden boughs to the water's edge. The lake's compact, sheltered setting means the experience is relatively peaceful even on busier weekends.
