About this spectacle

Federsee is the largest moor in southwest Germany, a hauntingly beautiful landscape of open water, reed beds, and quaking bog surrounding a shallow glacial lake near Bad Buchau in Baden-Württemberg. Visitors walk a floating-mat boardwalk that bobs gently underfoot, threading through sedge meadows and ancient peat, offering a rare immersive encounter with a Central European wetland ecosystem. The air carries the faint mineral scent of peat and the calls of marsh birds; herons wade at the water's edge while reed warblers chatter from dense stands. Mist often clings to the surface at dawn, lending the landscape an otherworldly stillness. In spring, the moor blooms with bog cotton and marsh orchids; autumn brings amber and ochre hues across the reed canopy. The boardwalk makes an otherwise inaccessible habitat navigable without harming the fragile floating mat, giving visitors the unusual sensation of walking on water.
