Fagrifoss Waterfall — Iceland
A secluded, moss-draped Icelandic waterfall in the southern highlands, offering rare solitude and glowing glacial light far from the tourist crowds.
About this spectacle
Fagrifoss, whose name translates to 'Beautiful Falls' in Icelandic, is a tucked-away cascade in the southern highlands, not far from the more-visited Lakagígar (Laki) volcanic region. Visitors who make the effort are rewarded with a lush, mossy gorge framing a multi-tiered drop of clear glacial water crashing into a dark basalt pool below. The surrounding landscape is quintessentially Icelandic: rolling tundra, volcanic rock, and the sweeping silence of the interior broken only by rushing water and wind. Because the waterfall sees far fewer visitors than Iceland's famous 'tourist triangle' falls, there is a genuine sense of solitude here. The green moss-draped walls of the gorge glow in the long summer daylight, and the mist from the falls catches the low arctic sun, occasionally producing small rainbows. Early summer brings the most vigorous flow as snowmelt feeds the river.
