Estany de Sant Maurici
A glacially formed alpine lake in the Pyrenees, mirroring the iconic twin peaks of Els Encantats in crystal-clear turquoise water.
About this spectacle
Estany de Sant Maurici is a glacially carved alpine lake nestled in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park in the Pyrenees of Catalonia, Spain. Visitors are greeted by mirror-still turquoise waters reflecting the twin granite peaks of Els Encantats soaring above. The surrounding landscape shifts dramatically through the seasons: snowmelt in late spring transforms the shores into wildflower meadows, while autumn drapes the pine and fir forests in amber. The air is crisp and pine-scented, the silence broken only by birdsong and the occasional splash of a brown trout. Wildlife including chamois, griffon vultures, and golden eagles frequent the area. The trail network radiating from the lake offers views of cascading streams and glacially polished rock faces. It is among the most visually arresting high-mountain lake settings in the Pyrenees.
