About this spectacle

Epupa Falls on the Kunene River marks the border between Angola and Namibia, where the river cascades through a series of dramatic drops fringed by towering makalani palms. The falls fan out across a wide, rocky gorge, creating a constant roar of white water that can be heard before the falls come into view. Visitors stand at the edge of red-rock cliffs watching the river split into multiple channels, each plunging into churning pools below. The spray sustains a ribbon of lush vegetation in an otherwise arid landscape, attracting birds and making for a striking visual contrast between desert and water. Light shifts dramatically at dawn and dusk, when mist catches the low sun and the palms cast long shadows across the rock. The surrounding semi-desert scenery of Namibe Province adds a sense of remoteness and raw scale.
