About this spectacle

At dawn in September and October, the flat marshes of Biebrza National Park fill with one of Europe's most arresting acoustic experiences: the deep, resonant bugling of European elk bulls in rut. Standing on the marsh boardwalk as early as 5am, visitors hear calls carrying up to 3 kilometres across the fen, often from multiple bulls simultaneously. Breath steams in the cold air, autumn mist pools in the hollows, and bulls with antler spans of up to 2 metres move through the reeds at close range — encounters at 50 metres from marked trails are described as reliable. The combination of sound, mist, scale, and proximity makes this one of Central Europe's most complete wildlife dawn experiences. At dusk the calling resumes, bookending short autumn days with sustained acoustic drama. The landscape itself — vast, flat, open marsh — amplifies both sight lines and sound, allowing observers to locate multiple animals at once across different sectors of the bog.
