Eistobel

About this spectacle

Eistobel is a dramatic gorge carved through the Allgäu limestone of southern Germany, where a seasonal stream tumbles through a narrow, moss-draped canyon. In winter and early spring, the frozen waterfall formations and ice-encrusted rock walls create a crystalline spectacle of hanging icicles and frozen cascades. Visitors walk a trail through the confined gorge, surrounded by towering rock faces that filter the light into cool, diffuse shafts. The sound of meltwater and dripping ice echoes off the limestone walls, and the cold, damp air carries the mineral scent of rock and frost. Summer brings rushing water, lush ferns, and the contrast of dark stone against green.
