Eisbach Stehende Welle
A permanent standing wave in the heart of Munich where expert surfers ride endlessly rushing white water beneath a park bridge, year-round.
About this spectacle
The Eisbach standing wave in Munich's English Garden is a rare urban surfing phenomenon where a powerful artificial wave surges continuously over a narrow channel beneath a bridge. Surfers queue on the banks and drop in one at a time, carving and spinning on a wave that never breaks — it simply stands still while the water rushes beneath. Spectators crowd the railings above and the stone banks alongside, cheering each ride. The roar of fast-moving water mingles with the buzz of the city, and on sunny days the scene feels electric: skilled riders executing cutbacks and aerial tricks just meters from passing pedestrians and cyclists. Even for non-surfers, watching the rotation of riders — beginners wobbling in and regulars holding the wave for minutes — is genuinely captivating. It is one of the world's most unusual surf spots, embedded in a landlocked city.
