About this spectacle

Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves over 200 Native American mounds along the bluffs above the Mississippi River in northeastern Iowa. Visitors walk forested trails to discover earthen mounds shaped like bears, birds, and other animals — constructed by Indigenous peoples over a thousand years ago. The Great Bear Mound, one of the largest effigy mounds in existence, stretches impressively across a wooded ridgeline. In autumn, the hardwood canopy blazes with color, framing these ancient earthworks in golden light. The overlooks offer sweeping panoramas of the Mississippi River Valley below. The site is quiet and contemplative — footfalls on leaf-covered paths, birdsong filtering through the canopy, and the sense that the landscape itself has been shaped by human intention across deep time.
