Eastern Egg Rock Puffin Colony
Watch restored Atlantic Puffins nest on a tiny Maine island — one of conservation's great success stories, accessible only by boat tour.
About this spectacle
Eastern Egg Rock is a small offshore island in Muscongus Bay, Maine, famous as the site of Project Puffin, which successfully restored Atlantic Puffins to the island after a century-long absence. Visitors arrive by boat tour to observe puffins bobbing offshore, landing on rocky ledges, and ferrying fish to burrow-nesting chicks. The squat, colorful-billed birds crowd the rocks alongside razorbills, common terns, and arctic terns, filling the air with calls. Getting close without disturbing the colony is mediated by the boat itself — passengers watch from deck as birds wheel past at eye level. The island's low profile and the open Atlantic light make for vivid, intimate wildlife encounters unlike any mainland birdwatching. Summer mornings offer the calmest seas and most active feeding flights.
