Dwarf Minke Whale Ribbon Reef Aggregation
Each winter, dwarf minke whales — the most interactive wild whale species on Earth — gather along the Ribbon Reefs of the northern Great Barrier Reef, approaching snorkellers with apparent curiosity and hovering alongside boats for minutes at a time.
About this spectacle
Each winter, dwarf minke whales gather along the Ribbon Reefs of the northern Great Barrier Reef in one of the ocean's most extraordinary wildlife encounters. Unlike most whale-watching experiences conducted from a distance, these whales actively approach snorkellers and dive boats, hovering alongside for minutes at a time in what researchers describe as genuine curiosity. Visitors float at the surface in the warm, clear waters of the Coral Sea, watching the whales glide beneath and around them — sometimes making eye contact, sometimes spiralling, always unpredictable. The reef itself provides a stunning visual backdrop: vivid corals, crystalline visibility, and the open blue beyond the reef edge. Morning light filters through the water in golden shafts as the whales circle. Sound is part of the experience too — minke whales produce a distinctive mechanical-sounding 'Star Wars' call audible underwater. No other place on Earth offers this species in such reliably close, voluntary contact with people.
