Dreimühlen-Wasserfall
Travertine waterfall actively building outward in the Vulkaneifel.
About this spectacle
Dreimühlen-Wasserfall is a living geological formation in the Vulkaneifel region of western Germany, where mineral-rich spring water continuously deposits travertine — a porous limestone — causing the waterfall to visibly grow and reshape itself over time. Visitors witness cascades tumbling over terraced travertine shelves, the water running crystal-clear over pale golden rock encrusted with moss and aquatic plants. The sound is gentle and layered, with multiple small falls feeding into quiet pools. The surrounding landscape is classic Eifel: wooded hillsides, volcanic soils, and a feeling of quiet remoteness despite easy access. The waterfall is most visually striking when water flow is strong — typically in the wetter months — and the travertine formations catch soft light filtering through the tree canopy. It is an unhurried place, best explored slowly to appreciate how the rock itself is still forming underfoot.
