Drakes Beach Elephant Seals
Hundreds of elephant seals breed, battle, and nurse pups on a California beach backed by dramatic white cliffs — all within Point Reyes National Seashore.
About this spectacle
At Drakes Beach within Point Reyes National Seashore, northern elephant seals haul out on the sand in one of California's most accessible wild marine mammal gatherings. During the winter breeding season, massive bulls engage in thunderous chest-to-chest battles for dominance, their calls carrying across the dunes. Females nurse pups on the beach while juveniles practice sparring nearby. The contrast of enormous bodies against the chalky white cliffs and cold Pacific surf makes for a visually dramatic scene. Visitors can observe from the beach or nearby areas, watching behaviors rarely seen this close without a boat trip. The smell of the colony, the barking, belching, and flipping of sand are all part of the raw, unfiltered encounter. Ranger-led programs are sometimes offered during peak pupping season, adding context to the remarkable biology on display.
