Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark Unesco Global Geopark — Vietnam
A UNESCO-listed karst plateau in Vietnam's far north, where ancient limestone peaks, deep gorges, and rolling mist create one of Asia's most dramatic highland landscapes.
About this spectacle
The Dong Van Karst Plateau rises through northern Vietnam's Ha Giang Province, a sweeping expanse of ancient limestone towers, deep gorges, and sculpted rock formations that date back hundreds of millions of years. Visitors move through dramatic mountain passes where jagged peaks jut from terraced valleys, mist clings to ridgelines in the early morning, and the pale grey and ochre stone creates a lunar-like landscape unlike anything else in Southeast Asia. The plateau's geological layering is visible in exposed cliff faces and canyon walls, telling a story written in rock across Devonian and Cambrian strata. The air at altitude carries a cool crispness, and the silence between villages is profound. Seasonal wildflowers — buckwheat blooms turning hillsides pink in autumn — add vivid colour against the bare karst. Winding mountain roads offer constantly shifting vantage points over the plateau's mosaic of limestone, sky, and farmland.
