Diamond Dust Rainbow — Lapland Finland
Diamond dust — a ground-level precipitation of tiny ice crystals in very cold, clear air below -20°C — produces optical phenomena unavailable in any other atmospheric condition: solar pillars, halos, arcs, and the 'ice crystal rainbow' (circumzenithal arc) visible from ground level in the horizontal sun of the Lapland winter. At Rovaniemi and Saariselkä on the coldest January mornings when diamond dust fills the still air, the sun's image is surrounded by a complete 22° halo, a brighter sun dog on each side, and often a circumzenithal arc above — all simultaneously visible in a display of ice optics that requires no cloud or precipitation, only the extraordinary cold of the Arctic January morning. The diamond dust crystals' sparkle in the low sun makes the air itself appear to be filled with moving light, and the optical display often outlasts the willingness of even committed observers to remain outside at -30°C.
About this spectacle
On the coldest January mornings in Rovaniemi and Saariselkä, when temperatures plunge below -20°C and the air turns utterly still, billions of microscopic ice crystals drift at ground level — a phenomenon called diamond dust. The low Arctic sun, barely clearing the horizon, catches each crystal and ignites the air with a shifting, glittering light. At the same moment, a complete 22° halo rings the sun in soft rainbow colours, two vivid sun dogs flare symmetrically on either side, and a circumzenithal arc — the so-called ice crystal rainbow — curves above in a bright inverted bow. These optical phenomena appear simultaneously, requiring no clouds, no rain, only the exceptional cold of a Lapland winter dawn. The air itself seems luminous and alive, every exhaled breath briefly adding to the crystal suspension. Staying outdoors long enough to absorb the full display demands real commitment: at -30°C, even warmly dressed visitors feel the cold pressing in, lending the experience a hard-earned, otherworldly quality that no photograph fully captures.
