Dhuandhar Falls — India

About this spectacle

At Dhuandhar Falls on the Narmada River near Jabalpur, the river suddenly narrows from roughly 300 metres to a rocky gorge barely 15 metres wide before plunging in a thunderous cascade. The name itself means 'smoke and thunder' in Hindi, a clue to what visitors encounter: an almost perpetual mist rising from the churning white water, soaking the air and coating nearby rocks and railings with a fine spray. The roar is audible long before the falls come into view. During and after the monsoon the volume is extraordinary — the milky froth contrasts dramatically against the dark marble cliffs of Bhedaghat. Visitors can observe from viewing platforms on the bank, take a short ropeway ride for an aerial perspective, or hire rowing boats in the dry season when the gorge is calmer. The surrounding area is accessible and popular, making it a relatively comfortable visit for most fitness levels.
