About this spectacle

Rising abruptly from the rolling prairie of northeastern Wyoming, Devils Tower is an unmistakable geological monolith — a fluted column of igneous rock whose vertical ridges stretch nearly 400 metres above the Belle Fourche River valley. Visitors approaching across the flat grasslands experience a growing sense of disbelief as the tower looms larger, its symmetrical columns of phonolite porphyry catching the light in dramatic relief. A paved trail circles the base, offering ever-changing perspectives as shadow and sunlight play across the ribbed walls. Prairie dogs chatter in the surrounding meadows, mule deer graze at the tree line, and raptors soar along the updrafts above the summit. At dusk, the tower turns amber and then deep violet against the Wyoming sky. Climbers can occasionally be spotted on the column faces, appearing minuscule against the sheer stone. The experience is defined by the tower's sheer improbability — an ancient volcanic intrusion standing alone on an open landscape, unlike anything else on the Great Plains.
