Devils Lake Wisconsin
Dramatic quartzite bluffs tower over a glacial lake in Wisconsin's Baraboo Hills — one of the Midwest's most striking landscapes.
About this spectacle
Devils Lake in Wisconsin's Baraboo Hills offers one of the Midwest's most dramatic landscape experiences. Quartzite bluffs rise nearly 500 feet above a glacially carved lake, their reddish and pink hues catching warm light at dawn and dusk. Visitors standing at the cliff edges look out over forest-fringed water, with the surrounding Baraboo Range forming a broad, ancient arc on the horizon. In autumn, the bluffs erupt in fiery foliage that reflects brilliantly on the calm lake surface. The park's rocky talus slopes create a rugged, almost otherworldly texture underfoot, while the calls of hawks riding thermals above the ridgelines add a sense of wildness. Trails wind through dense forest and emerge suddenly onto exposed rock faces with sweeping panoramas — moments of visual surprise that reward the climb.
