Demoiselle Crane Migration — Khichan
Every autumn, tens of thousands of demoiselle cranes descend on the small Rajasthan village of Khichan where locals have fed them for generations.
About this spectacle
Each autumn, the skies above the small Rajasthan village of Khichan fill with the bugling calls and sweeping wingbeats of tens of thousands of demoiselle cranes. These elegant grey birds — the world's smallest crane species — descend on the village in vast, swirling flocks, drawn by grain spread by local families who have sustained this feeding tradition for generations. At dawn, visitors witness the spectacle of cranes arriving in waves, landing in clouds at the feeding grounds, their calls forming a constant, resonant chorus. The birds move in synchrony, jostling and preening in dense, shoulder-to-shoulder congregations. The light at first sun transforms the scene: warm golden tones catching hundreds of pale bodies and slate-grey wings. Outside feeding hours the cranes roost on nearby water bodies, lifting in mass ascents that darken the sky. The intimacy of the village setting makes this one of India's most accessible and emotionally compelling wildlife encounters.
