Damwild-Brunft Letzlinger Heide
Fallow deer fill Letzlinger Heide with roars and clashing antlers each autumn rut — a raw, immersive wildlife spectacle on the open heath.
About this spectacle
Each autumn, the heathlands of Letzlinger Heide echo with the haunting roars of fallow deer stags as they enter their annual rut — the Brunft. Visitors moving quietly through the birch and pine-fringed heath may witness stags clashing antlers, strutting through stands of golden bracken, and herding groups of does across open clearings. The low morning mist that often cloaks the Heide amplifies the atmosphere, muffling sound then letting a bellowing roar break through without warning. The coppery coats of the bucks, the drumming of hooves on sandy soil, and the sharp smell of turned earth make for a fully sensory wildlife experience. This is one of northern Germany's underrated autumn wildlife events, best experienced at dawn on weekdays when visitor numbers are low and animals move freely.
