Cunningham Falls is Maryland's largest cascading waterfall, tumbling roughly 78 feet over a series of rocky steps through a forested gorge in Catoctin Mountain Park. Visitors follow a wooded trail to reach the falls, where the sound of rushing water grows louder as the cascade comes into view between hemlock and hardwood trees. The rocky ledges invite lingering — mist drifts off the white water on warm days, and the surrounding forest turns brilliant shades of orange and red in autumn. In winter, partial ice formations sculpt the falls into dramatic frozen curtains. The pool at the base reflects light filtering through the canopy, making it a favorite subject for photographers seeking a classic mid-Atlantic waterfall shot. Spring snowmelt pushes the flow to its most powerful, while summer draws families who cool off near the base on hot afternoons.
