Crystal River Manatee Sanctuary
Swim alongside wild Florida manatees in warm spring-fed waters — one of the only places on Earth to legally encounter these gentle giants face to face.
About this spectacle
Crystal River in Florida is one of the few places in the United States where visitors can legally swim alongside wild Florida manatees. During winter months, warm spring-fed waters attract hundreds of these gentle giants seeking refuge from cooler Gulf temperatures. Snorkeling among them in the crystalline, 72°F spring water is an intimate, unhurried encounter — manatees are curious and often approach on their own terms, their whiskered faces and barnacle-dotted skin just inches away. Underwater visibility can be exceptional, allowing clear views of their slow, graceful movements. Above the surface, kayaks and pontoon boats navigate shallow channels past overhanging cypresses, while herons and anhingas watch from the banks. The experience is quiet, deeply personal, and unlike any other wildlife encounter in North America.
