Crex Meadows Cranes
Thousands of sandhill cranes stage at Crex Meadows each autumn, filling the Wisconsin sky with ancient calls as they spiral down to roost at dusk.
About this spectacle
Each autumn, thousands of sandhill cranes converge on Crex Meadows Wildlife Area in northwestern Wisconsin, transforming the sky above the marshes and sedge meadows into a living river of wings. Visitors gather at dusk to watch staging flocks spiral down from the clouds to roost on shallow wetlands, filling the air with their prehistoric rattling calls. The sheer volume of sound — a rolling, guttural chorus — is as striking as the visual spectacle. At dawn the cranes lift off in waves, catching the early light as they depart to feed in surrounding fields. The landscape itself is flat and open, allowing unobstructed views across the refuge. Spring migration also brings cranes through in smaller numbers. The site is managed by the Wisconsin DNR and offers pull-off viewing areas along gravel roads that wind through the property.
